Intermediate Care Unit

The recovery process from cardiac procedures and critical illness requires the close monitoring and careful progress that is provided in the Intensive Care Unit. Patients often progress smoothly through Critical Care Services, moving from ICU into Intermediate Care and often safely return home in just a few days.

Lowell General Hospital has a total of 96 Intermediate Care Units at the main and Saints campuses. These units provide care for patients who may still require close monitoring, or be too ill to be on a regular medical or surgical floor but do not require the intense level of care provided in the ICU.

Complete connected care after discharge

Critical care patients benefit from a variety of hospital programs and services to help manage cardiac disease and chronic illnesses, such as our Outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation program, Diabetes and Endocrine Center, Anticoagulation Clinic, as well as our affiliated home care nursing staff from Circle Home.
