Dr. Birkhead is a Certified Cardiac Device Specialist by the Heart Rhythm Society and TESTAMUR American Society of Echocardiography. He is a member of the Massachusetts Chapter of the American College of Cardiology, a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, and a member of the Heart Rhythm Society, American Society of Echocardiography and the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography.
Dr. Birkhead performed the Merrimack Valley’s first cardiac catheterization when Lowell General opened its cath lab in 1991. A leader in the field of cardiology, he participates in clinical trials that focus on advancing the care for patients with cardiovascular disease. Dr. Birkhead was instrumental in bringing emergent and elective angioplasty to community hospitals under the MASSCOMM trial.
