The rise of routine colon screening for adults over 50 has brought cancer rates down significantly over the past 20 years, but rates among adults 45-50 have begun to rise. For that reason, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recently lowered the recommended age to begin routine colon screens from 50 to 45. Wellforce Announces Name Change to Tufts Medicine

Wellforce, the high quality, integrated Massachusetts health system, announced today it will be uniting its member organizations under a new name – Tufts Medicine. Tufts Medicine includes Lowell General Hospital, MelroseWakefield Hospital, Tufts Medical Center, Home Health Foundation and a network of more than 2,000 physicians. Local hospitals within the system will operate under their respective names in conjunction with the Tufts Medicine name. Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program

SANE Bags support assault victims in ED

When a victim of sexual assault arrives at the Emergency Department, the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program is there to provide support. The Center for Hope and Healing (CHH) recently donated a dozen SANE bags to the Lowell General ED to provide our patients access to support and services when a nurse examiner is not available. The bags include some clothing, personal care items and information on how CHH can help, as well as the bag to for them to carry belongings and discharge papers. 2022 Visitor Restrictions

Visitor Policy Change to Allow One Visitor/Support Person

Effective Tuesday, February 8, Lowell General Hospital will lift visitor restrictions to allow one visitor/support person (over the age of 18) at a time per patient during the designated visitor hours of 1:00pm to 7:00pm daily. Our Emergency Department and Urgent Care locations will also permit one visitor/support person at a time per patient during all hours of operation. Some visiting hours exceptions will be in place for areas such as maternity, and additional exemptions may be made based on the clinical team’s discretion. The updated forecast for this weekend calls for up to 20 inches of snow in our area with snow expected to fall between two to four inches per hour between 5:00 am and 5:00 pm Saturday, January 29. Lowell General Hospital has made the preparations needed to ensure we are well positioned to serve our patients for the duration of this winter storm and have allocated our resources appropriately. New COVID-19 SMART Health Card Verifies Your Vaccination Status

Massachusetts residents who were vaccinated in-state can now request, view, and/or print their own COVID-19 SMART Health card. This will allow those who have been vaccinated the ability to create a digitally formatted certification with a QR Code that verifies their immunization status. To assist hospitals coping with the worst of the latest COVID-19 surge, Gov. Charlie Baker activated the National Guard on December 21. Six of those soldiers were deployed to Lowell General to provide non-clinical support in the Emergency Department at main and Saints campuses.
