Good medicine: Innovative program helps bridge the gaps in diabetes care

Diabetes is found in every community, but in the United States it disproportionately effects Black, Latino, and Southeast Asian people, as well as those experiencing poverty and income insecurity. A lack of access to affordable and healthy foods and adequate mental health support for diabetic patients and caregivers only add to the challenges. Dr. Miguel Ariza, MD, FACE, ECNU, Medical Director of the Diabetes and Endocrine Center at Lowell General Hospital, sees these disparities first-hand—the city of Lowell has the highest numbers of people living with diabetes in the commonwealth.  Diabetes is found in every community, but in the United States it disproportionately effects Black, Latino, and Southeast Asian people, as well as those experiencing poverty and income insecurity.
