Lowell General Hospital creating alternative care site at UMass Lowell

In collaboration with the Governor’s Office, the City of Lowell, UMass Lowell and the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), Lowell General Hospital is preparing an alternative care site to provide additional bed capacity to the Merrimack Valley in anticipation of a continued rise in cases of COVID-19.

Referrals to the Lowell General Hospital Alternative Care Site

At this time, we are not able to accommodate transfer referrals from other hospitals and organizations to the Lowell General Hospital Alternative Care Site. We will continue to update this information as the situation evolves. If you have questions about possible future transfers, please contact 978-942-2420.

Located inside the UMass Lowell Campus Recreation Center on Aiken Street, the care site will have the potential to add 90 beds for patients in the Merrimack Valley. Led by MEMA and Lowell General Hospital officials, preparation of the space is underway with a goal of being ready for patients by Monday, April 20. The site will begin with 15 beds and scale its capacity as needed.

Lowell General Hospital will have operational control of the site and plans to use it for patients who no longer require a high level of care at the hospital but are not ready to recover at home.

“We are grateful for the incredible support of Gov. Charlie Baker, Sec. Marylou Sudders, UMass Lowell Chancellor Jacqueline Moloney, City Manager Eileen Donoghue and officials from MEMA for working with us to create this space,” said Jody White, President and CEO of Lowell General Hospital and Circle Health. “As we move into the toughest phase of this public health emergency, this space may prove to be a vital resource to our ability to meet the needs of the Merrimack Valley.”
