Lowell General Hospital Ball for Community Health Initiatives Raises Over $217,000 to Support Local Health and Wellness Programs

A sold out crowd of 550 guests celebrated Lowell General Hospital’s 8th Annual Ball for Community Health Initiatives on Saturday, March 2, 2013. The event, held at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium, raised over $217,000 to help fund vital health and wellness programs which benefit residents of the Greater Lowell community.

“This year’s ball carried on the tradition of being an incredible night where everyone came together to support organizations that are doing terrific work in our community,” said Norm Deschene, President and CEO of Lowell General. “The Ball committee, led once again by Dr. Jonathan Drake and Dr. Loreen Ali, did an outstanding job in creating an atmosphere where everyone had fun while truly making a difference.”

Three local non-profits were awarded Community Health Initiative Grants for 2013. They were:

  • University of Massachusetts Lowell’s public awareness program to improve the quality of life for residents affected by asthma
  • Greater Lowell Technical High School’s Opiate Awareness and Prevention program
  • Visiting Nurse Association of Greater Lowell’s Mental Health Home Care program

In addition to funds raised for the community programs, office furniture and other items were donated to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore program. The proceeds from the sale of these items will be used to help build homes in the community. W.B. Mason also donated lounge furniture for use at the event and will partner with The Open pantry to help furnish their new pantry location with office furniture.

Partnering with local company, Xenith, a special live auction was also held to raise additional funds to support concussion prevention in youth sports. One lucky attendee that supported this auction received a beautiful Circle of Life diamond necklace donated by Barmakian Jewelers.

Event flowers from the evening were donated to the Power of Flowers project. The Power of Flowers Project delivers flowers free to recipients that are chosen through many channels, including community outreach programs, friends, elder services, home care organizations, senior centers and cancer clinics.
