The Groton Dunstable Education Foundation (GDEF) which distributes about $30,000 in grants annually to district schools, approached Lowell General for assistance to make local school nurses' wish to computerize paperwork come true. Lowell General Hospital responded with a donation of $13,357 for the purchase of a special computer program called School Nurse Assistant Program (SNAP) Health Center. The software allows school nurses to review a student's visit history, immunization status, medication information and other records at a click of a mouse.
"As a hospital recognized nationally among Health Care's Most Wired, we incorporate information technology systems for the delivery of care of our patients," Amy Hoey, LGH's vice president of patient-care services and chief nursing officer, said in a press release. "It's exciting to see a similar component of health-care excellence moving into the schools' management of the students' medical record."
Implementing the software, made possible by this donation, will help decrease the amount of paperwork the state Department of Health requires to analyze school health services in an effort to come up with better prevention methods for different health problems, and it will make nurses more available to students.
