Nationally recognized neuroradiologist Christopher Filippi, MD, has been named Radiologist-in-Chief at Tufts Medical Center, the Medical Center announced today. Dr. Filippi also is being proposed to Tufts University as the Chair of the Department of Radiology at Tufts University School of Medicine. He is expected to assume his new position in early November 2020.

“Dr. Filippi is an innovative leader and educator and the perfect person to lead our Radiology Department and strengthen integration across the Wellforce system,” said Michael Apkon, MD, PhD, President and CEO of Tufts Medical Center. “He possesses extensive experience managing clinical imaging departments in academic and community hospital settings and is no stranger to the implementation and synthesis of electronic health care record platforms.”

Dr. Filippi joins Tufts MC from the Hofstra School of Medicine in New York, where he held the position of Vice Chair of Biomedical Imaging and Translational Sciences and Professor of Radiology at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell Health for the past six years. He previously served as Division Chief of Neuroradiology at Columbia University and Director of Clinical MR and MR Research at the University of Vermont.

“I’m excited to partner with clinicians across Tufts Medical Center and the Wellforce health system for precision health and evidence-based medical practice,” said Dr. Filippi. “I believe that by embracing emerging science and technology, radiologists can become drivers, early adaptors and leaders of transformative technologies that have the power to change how we diagnose, treat and manage care for our patients.”

A devoted researcher and mentor, Dr. Filippi’s clinical research is focused on pediatric neuroimaging, novel magnetic resonance (MR) techniques and translational MR in pediatric and adult demyelinating diseases and glioma. He’s also active in the study of artificial intelligence (AI) and deep machine learning and their application to clinical workflow and image analysis to both develop quantitative outcome metrics and reduce operational costs. In 2018 he was named Deputy Editor of AI for the American Journal of Neuroradiology and is Chair of the American Society of Neuroradiology AI Task Force, where he is a member of national and international working groups developing AI trainings for clinicians and researchers.

A graduate of Cornell University Medical College, Dr. Filippi completed his Internship in Internal Medicine at Yale University-Greenwich Hospital and his Residency in Diagnostic Radiology at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical College. He went on to complete a Neuroradiology Fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine. A native New Englander, Dr. Filippi was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts and grew up in Connecticut and Vermont. He will be returning to Massachusetts with his wife, Mari Yamashita, a graduate of Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and their son Niko, who will soon begin his Sophomore year in college at Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan, his mother’s alma mater.
