The Medical Staff Scholarship program provides financial support to graduating high school seniors who are continuing in a full-time educational program. Students are recognized for exceptional accomplishments in academic, cultural and civic pursuits during their high school careers.
The Medical Staff Scholarship Fund is established and maintained by the physicians of Lowell General Hospital.
Each year the Medical Staff awards two scholarships to support students who are Lowell General Hospital employees, or children of employees, who graduate from secondary school in the spring and are continuing their education in the fall. These scholarships are renewable for up to four years.
Here is a closer look at this year’s winners:
Ella Heitmeyer, a member of the Littleton High School Class of 2019, will attend the University of Virginia in the fall and plans to pursue a double major in global public health and biology. During high school, Ella was an active member of the school community. She was a member of the indoor and outdoor track and field teams serving as captain, National Honor Society, Math League, BioBuilders Club, concert band and drama productions. One teacher states, “Since freshman year, it was abundantly clear that Ella was an exceptional student – the kind that one may meet only once or twice in the high school environment.”
Additionally, Ella was an active volunteer within her community. She has traveled to numerous locations to serve the underserved, including Guatemala, Kentucky and Philadelphia. Within the past year, Ella has also volunteered over 100 hours at the front desk of Lowell General Hospital’s main campus to bring Complete connected care to all patients and their respective visitors. Ella is the daughter of David and Cynthia Heitmeyer of Littleton. Cynthia currently works for Lowell General Hospital as a Marketing Communications Specialist.
Paola Matos, a member of the Bishop Guertin High School Class of 2019, will attend Trinity College in the fall, where she plans to begin her journey in the medical field. “Through my involvement with Lowell General Hospital, and being the daughter of a nurse, I have interest in learning all about the medical field and taking steps towards working in the hospital in the near future,” says Paola.
During high school, Paola was a member of the National Honor Society and an active volleyball player playing year-round for her school team, a club team and beach volleyball in the summer. Paola is also a frequent volunteer at Girls, Inc., in Nashua, NH, where she tutors inner-city students and serves as a big sister mentor. Paola also volunteers at Lowell General Hospital’s Saints campus in the medical day care center and joins her mother as a volunteer at the hospital’s TeamWalk for CancerCare fundraiser. Paola is the daughter of Raimundo Matos and Indy Robles of Bedford, NH. Indy currently works for Lowell General Hospital as a Clinical Manager at the Cancer Center.
