Managing GERD + Acid Reflux During the Holidays

November 23, 2021

Advice from our own gastroenterologists and registered dietitians.

GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) or acid reflux can make the holidays, and all those holiday meals and treats, difficult to enjoy. Our registered dietitians and gastroenterologists share these tips to help you satisfy your cravings without uncomfortable symptoms:

  1. Eat small plates throughout the day instead of one large meal. Feeling full may trigger symptoms and discomfort.
  2. Avoid high-fat foods. Choose white meats instead of dark meat or ham. Limit using gravy and consider making baked potatoes instead of mashed potatoes. Try steaming or roasting vegetables instead of casseroles. Limit spicy foods and sweets.
  3. Choose your beverage carefully. Avoid or limit certain beverages like alcohol, acidic juices, caffeine and carbonated beverages. Try water, decaffeinated tea or low-fat milk.
  4. Wear loose-fitting clothes and avoid laying down for at least 45 minutes after eating. This will take some pressure off your stomach and help with digestion.
  5. Take any medication as prescribed. And, if okayed by your provider, try an over-the-counter heartburn treatment like an antacid.

Remember to speak with your primary care doctor or gastroenterologist about any concerns you may have.
