Highest Patient Safety Rating - Grade A 2021

April 29, 2021

Tufts Medical Center was recognized with an ‘A’ Rating in the Spring 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for meeting the highest patient safety standards.

Tufts MC has now received consecutive ‘A’ grades, after also receiving Leapfrog’s highest-possible rating in the Fall 2020 Hospital Safety Grade

Tufts Medical Center announced today that the hospital has received an ‘A’ in the Spring 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, recognizing the success of Tufts MC’s efforts to keep patients safe and meet or exceed the highest patient safety standards in the United States. The ‘A’ grade is the highest designation bestowed by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization committed to health care quality and safety.

“This ‘A’ rating gives our patients peace of mind that when they walk through our doors, they know they will receive the highest level of safe patient care from our doctors, nurses and members of our care team,” said Michael Tarnoff, MD, Interim President and CEO and Surgeon-in-Chief at Tufts Medical Center. “Leapfrog’s hospital safety ratings are among the most recognized and well-regarded in the country and we are thrilled to have received an ‘A’ in back-to-back Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades. Our teams are working tirelessly to care for a high burden of patient need and we are so proud and appreciative of them all. In the face of these unprecedented challenges our teams have provided a quality of care worthy of this designation.”

Developed under the guidance of a national expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses up to 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign an ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade to more than 2,700 U.S. acute-care hospitals across the country twice per year. These measures – which include metrics on preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections - are vital to achieving the highest level of patient safety and satisfaction.

“Providing high-quality, safe patient care has always been our top priority,” said Erik Garpestad, MD, Interim Chief Medical Officer and Associate Chief of the Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Division at Tufts Medical Center. “It’s a true honor to see our hard work and organizational focus rewarded with Leapfrog’s highest safety designation.”

Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public. To see Tufts MC’s full grade details and access patient tips for staying safe in the hospital, visit hospitalsafetygrade.org.
