Become a Volunteer

Volunteers play a vital role at Lowell General Hospital. Each year they provide thousands of hours of service for the hospital. We welcome you to join us in helping to serve our patients, their loved ones and the professional staff who care for them. Being a volunteer at Lowell General Hospital is a commitment, but one that is met with many rewards.

About Our Program

At Lowell General Hospital, the Volunteer Services Department does not have summer programs or shadow programs. We instead focus on three volunteer tracks with long-term opportunities which give each volunteer a chance to dive deep into the healthcare experience. This approach allows volunteers to build relationships with staff, learn about different careers in healthcare and finish the program with an enriching experience that lasts a lifetime.

Program Requirements

Each volunteer accepted into the program must agree to complete our medical clearance requirements and hospital orientation which includes:

  • Commitment to volunteer one day a week (3-4 hours per shift) for a minimum of 100 hours. The program usually takes 8-12 months to complete; however, volunteers are always welcome to continue with us beyond the 100 hours.
  • Proof of required immunizations, mandatory flu shot (during flu season), TB test, criminal background check and hospital and department specific orientation.

Program Details

Junior Track
Are you a high school student considering a future in the medical field? Do you enjoy helping others and learning new things? Lowell General Hospital may just be the place for you to make new friends, and make a difference.

  • To be considered for acceptance into the program you must be 15 years of age and going into 10th, 11th, or 12th grade.
  • Registration for our Group Interview and Orientation Session is offered twice a year, September 1st and February 1st. Space is limited to 30 students per session and due to a high volume of interest, our registration fills up quickly. To be registered for one of the two sessions we hold each year, you must call on September 1st (session one) or February 1st (session two). We will take names until we hit our 30 person limit but it usually only takes 5-7 days to hit our maximum so we suggest calling in as soon as registration opens. All paperwork will be mailed out to the students once registered. Not all students registered for a session will be accepted into the program. Applications mailed into the volunteer office are not considered registered for an upcoming session.
  • The track requires a commitment of one day a week for a total of 100 hours of service, usually taking one to two years to complete. The Junior Track is an after school program with openings Monday-Friday 3:00–5:00pm or 4:00-7:00pm.

College Student Track
Our college track at Lowell General Hospital is designed to provide students pursuing a medically related career in college with an opportunity to gain first-hand experience in a hospital environment. Students provide needed assistance to the medical, nursing and ancillary staff as well as to our patients, families and visitors.

  • Students interested in this track must have completed at least one semester of college to apply for this program.
  • Interviews for our college track are conducted throughout the year based on the availability of volunteer roles. Please call the Volunteer Office at 978-937-6280 to inquire about the next opportunity to schedule an interview.
  • If accepted as a volunteer, you will be assigned to a 3-4 hour shift once per week and must commit to complete a minimum of 100 hours of service. We do not accept students only able to commit to the summer months.
  • Volunteers must also comply with our medical clearance, criminal background check and orientation.
  • Download the College Volunteer Application. Bring this completed form with you on your interview.

Adult Track
At Lowell General Hospital, adult volunteers serve in a wide variety of roles and provide essential assistance to patients, employees and visitors. Most of our volunteers have been with us for many years – and some for decades. Our volunteers can always be seen throughout most areas of the hospital. We have interesting jobs for them, and they do significant work for us. Whether you are a retired adult with a flexible schedule or a working adult with specific hours to give, we will make an effort to try and find a position that matches your skills, interests and availability.

  • Interviews for our adult track are conducted throughout the year based on availability of volunteer roles. Please call the volunteer office at 978-937-6280 to inquire about the next opportunity to schedule an interview.
  • If accepted as a volunteer, you will be assigned to a four hour shift once per week and asked to commit to completing a minimum of 100 hours of service.
  • Volunteers must also comply with our medical clearance, criminal background check and orientation.
  • Download the Adult Volunteer Application. Bring this completed form with you on your interview.
