Digital Mammograms

Celebrate good health with a mammogram

The American Cancer Society recommends a baseline mammogram between the ages of 35 and 40, with routine mammograms recommended annually after age 40. Based on your personal and family medical history, your health care provider will determine how often you should have a mammogram.

Digital Mammography

Lowell General Hospital offers fully-digital mammography suites to provide clear, detailed images of your breast tissue with Bella Blankets for patient comfort. Changes in your breast often show up in a mammogram long before you can feel them during a self exam. Mammograms are an important part of a woman's breast health. Find out more about the Breast Health program at Lowell General.

If you are within the recommended age group for a mammogram, make an appointment for a screening mammogram at the Women's Imaging Center in Chelmsford or at the main hospital. You do not need a written order from your doctor for a screening mammogram.

What to Expect for a Mammogram

Before Your Appointment:

  • Please pre-register for your appointment by calling 978-937-6023, 978-937-6429, Monday - Friday, 7:00am-8:00pm
  • An Appointment Reminder with specific instructions for your exam will be mailed to you
  • Obtain copies of any recent films from mammograms performed at another facility to bring to the exam

At the Women's Imaging Centers, our goal is to have you in and out of the facility within 30 minutes for a routine mammogram. On the day of your mammogram, we suggest:

  1. Wearing a two-piece outfit so you only need remove your top for the exam
  2. Please don't wear deodorant, talcum powder, lotion or other substances under your arms or on your breasts

The procedure is simple:
A licensed mammographer will position your breast on the imaging machine, where it will be gently compressed. This may be uncomfortable, but is not painful. The technologist will x-ray each breast and a radiologist will then examine the digital images for abnormalities.

*LGH is licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to perform mammograms.
