Top-Notch Thoracic Surgery Expertise

Thanks to an expanding partnership between The Cancer Center at Lowell General Hospital and the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization, Inc. (MGPO), patients with cancer who need thoracic surgery can now have it performed by surgeons from the renowned Massachusetts General Hospital — right in Lowell.

MGPO thoracic surgeons Christopher Morse, MD, and Ashok Muniappan, MD, will not only see and operate on patients here weekly but also are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for consultations, emergencies and to answer questions.

“We will probably perform 80 percent of needed thoracic procedures right at Lowell General Hospital,” Dr. Morse says. Notably, Lowell General Hospital has invested in state-of-the-art operating suites, providing the Mass General surgeons with the advanced facilities and equipment they’re accustomed to in Boston.

“For the more complex cases that require tertiary support, we’ll perform the surgery in Boston,” he adds. “But our goal is to keep a high level of thoracic surgery here in the community, for the convenience of patients and their families.”

Thoracic surgeons operate on diseases within the chest cavity (also called the thorax or thoracic cavity) that affect the lungs, esophagus, chest wall and mediastinum (the area in the chest between the lungs). Among the malignancies they treat are lung cancer, esophageal cancer, mediastinal tumors and tumors of the chest wall.

“Thoracic surgery has become incredibly specialized in the past 15 years, and the collaboration between Mass General and Lowell General is a way to bring this specialized expertise to the community,” Dr. Morse says.

Both Drs. Morse and Muniappan have extensive expertise in performing minimally invasive thoracic surgery. For patients, this promises less pain and blood loss, and a faster recovery.

For patients who require chemotherapy or radiation therapy after surgery, it also means they can start this treatment faster — at The Cancer Center at Lowell General Hospital.

Dr. Morse and his colleagues are happy to bring their expertise to patients at The Cancer Center and provide advanced level care to the community.
