Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Pulmonary rehabilitation at Lowell General Hospital is an outpatient program for people who have emphysema, bronchitis, asthma, or other lung disorders. Patients receive an individualized exercise program that is based on the individual's health status and on a physician's evaluation. The program's primary goals and benefits are to:

  • Reduce shortness of breath and improve the ability to perform daily activities through breathing retraining and exercise
  • Increase exercise capacity through conditioning
  • Improve knowledge of lung disease through educational programs
  • Provide emotional support from our pulmonary rehabilitation team and fellow participants.

Pulmonary educational programs are scheduled in conjunction with exercise sessions and include topics on:

  • Breathing retraining techniques
  • How the heart and lungs work
  • Lung conditions
  • Signs of infection
  • Exercise
  • Nutrition
  • Treatment and medication
  • Bronchial hygiene
  • Relaxation and panic control

The Pulmonary Rehab Department is located at the Lowell General Hospital Saints Campus, One Hospital Drive, Lowell, MA. The care team includes: Registered Nurses, an Exercise Physiologist and Respiratory Therapist.

Hours of operation are: Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 7:00am to 5:30pm; Tuesday and Thursday, from 7:00am – 4:30pm. For further information about Pulmonary Rehabilitation, please call 978-934-8238.

Better Breathers Support Group

Better Breathers Pulmonary Support Group offers community based education and practical support to people with Chronic Pulmonary Disease and to their caregivers.

Date: Meets the second Monday of the month*
Time: noon - 1:00pm
Location: Saints Campus, One Hospital Drive, Lowell, MA, Education Room - Ground Floor, next to Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab
Cost: FREE

*If a holiday falls on the second Monday, the group will meet on the following Monday
