Dracut Resident Thanks Tick for Early Detection – Walks to Support Cancer Center

Dracut resident Gail Perreault is actually thankful for finding a tick on her neck last year. Gail always suffered from "white coat syndrome" and was not good about keeping up with routine mammograms or doctor's visits. But when a tick bite led to swollen lymph nodes, she was forced to go to the doctor. After being reminded she was overdue for a mammogram, Gail's girlfriend persuaded her to make an appointment so they could go together for moral support. That appointment led to a diagnosis of breast cancer in January of 2011, but the good news was that she was in the early stages - non-invasive ductal carcinoma. Gail was treated at Lowell General Hospital's Cancer Center and is now cancer free and healthy...and she has a tick to thank for that!

Gail formed a team – Gail's Gang – to participate in TeamWalk for CancerCare. There are now close to 40 registered members who have collectively raised over $3,000 and counting! She is dedicated to this cause because she knows first hand what a difference having a Cancer Center in her own backyard made to her during her treatment.

"The staff is so warm and caring," said Gail. "I was very impressed with the care and it was great having the center so close by - I was able to go through treatment without missing work!"
