Cancer Center Celebrates 4th Annual Survivorship Day

Community gathers for spirit of survivors at Lowell General Hospital

Survivorship ... it is a journey from the very moment of cancer diagnosis and it continues with you forever. On June 8, 2011 patients, families, friends, hospital staff and most of all, survivors, gathered together in Lowell General Hospital's Clark Auditorium to celebrate the spirit of cancer survivors. Organized by the Cancer Center at Lowell General Hospital, the 4th annual Survivorship Day drew a crowd of over 100 people to enjoy a night filled with the perseverance and strength of survivorship.

Complete with food, music, free massages, and a candlelight ceremony paying tribute to those who have been touched by cancer, this year's event raised $3000 from its raffle prizes for the Cancer Center's Survivorship fund. Money raised for the fund goes to a survivor or a survivor's family, last year helping a survivor to pay for travel expenses to take his family to Disney World.

A local event for National Survivorship Day, the celebration also included three patient speakers and one caregiver speaker who expressed the hope, courage, and inspiration of the spirit of survivorship. Judith Baldwin, a breast cancer and melanoma survivor, Dean Ward, a multiple myeloma survivor, and Sheara Whaley, an ovarian cancer survivor, each shared their own experiences with cancer and reassured others that they are not alone in this battle. Karen Joslyn also recounted how cancer touched her life as a caregiver and offered words of encouragement to family members.

In a time where cancer touches so many lives, celebrating survivorship reminds everyone that with pain and fear comes hope to fight this disease. Lowell General Hospital's Cancer Center recognizes that with each diagnosis begin seach journey of survivorship.
