Lowell General Hospital's TeamWalk for CancerCare Raises a Record-breaking $575,785 to Benefit Area Cancer Patients

May 20, 2009 - Lowell, MA - Even mother nature could not dampen the spirits of the dedicated throng of walkers, volunteers and sponsors who raised a record-breaking $578,785 at the 10th Anniversary TeamWalk for CancerCare, which took place Sunday, May 17, in Lowell.

Despite drenching rain and high winds early in the day, walkers were out in force enjoying the fun and camaraderie of the TeamWalk event, celebrating its tenth year benefitting area cancer patients in our community. The walk, which started a year after the Cancer Center at Lowell General opened, has grown substantially over the last decade and so has the help that it provides. Over the last 10 years, it is estimated that TeamWalk has raised more than $3 million dollars, which has assisted over 10,000 people. TeamWalk dollars continue to provide the small things that make a big difference for cancer patients, including: more than 1000 medications not covered by insurance; more than 1000 wigs; more than 10,000 complimentary rides to and from treatments; over a hundred community cancer screenings; cancer prevention programs; and the area's most extensive array of support groups open to cancer patients and their families throughout the region.

Drew Weber, honorary Chairman of the 10th Anniversary TeamWalk remembers being among the small, but enthusiastic group that made the first walk a reality in 2000. "It was very, very small in comparison to today, but it had a profound effect on me personally," said Weber. "I have seen first hand the generosity and dedication shown by all participants in regard to this event - it's an amazing tribute to the caring people of Lowell General Hospital and of the Greater Lowell community."

Approximately 4000 walkers attended the event, which begins and ends at the Tsongas arena, and features a 6-mile or 3-mile route through scenic areas of downtown Lowell including the Riverwalk and Sampas Pavilion.
