Lowell General Hospital Announces Presenting Sponsor for 2012 Charity Walk
April 10, 2012 - Lowell, MA – Lowell General Hospital has announced SmithFest Foundation will be the presenting sponsor for the 13th annual TeamWalk for CancerCare event which will take place on May 20th at the Tsongas Center at UMASS Lowell. The charity fundraiser draws more than 5,000 walkers from the region and since its inception has raised more than five million dollars.
SmithFest Foundation Inc., a non-profit organization that specializes in fundraising through specialty events, chose to donate to TeamWalk this year because of what the hospital brings to the community at large.
"Our board of directors thought this was a perfect fit," says Executive Director Fred Smith. "The hospital and its cancer center are a great support to the residents here and many of us are connected to the cause in some way. We are excited to be a part of this inspirational event."
TeamWalk for CancerCare, with the help of generous corporate partners, raised $854,000 to support the Cancer Center's services for patients and their families in 2011. TeamWalk funds make a difference in the lives of cancer patients by paying for medications, nutritional supplements, wigs and prostheses, support groups, skilled nursing visits, transportation, mini-grants, and supportive services to patients of all cancer types. Funds raised enable Lowell General Hospital to provide assistance, support, and services to help people feel better, build confidence and instill hope throughout their battle with cancer.

Lowell General Hospital is an independent, not-for-profit, community hospital serving the Greater Lowell area and surrounding communities. In 2007 Fred Smith and his wife Danielle organized the first SmithFest as a fun event for friends and family. The annual Amazing Race-style event grew in popularity and by 2010, the SmithFest Foundation was established as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The SmithFest Foundation oversees the charitable operations, while an executive board assists in planning activities and events. The Smiths have raised thousands of dollars for a number of charities through these fun events that allow them to give back to the community they both were raised in.
