Lowell General Hospital has recently been recognized as a Certified Participant of the National Quality Measures for Breast Centers Program (NQMBC™). This distinguished honor represents a commitment by this breast center to provide the highest level of quality breast health care to patients in their community.

Measuring and comparing quality performance is essential in assessing patient care and allocating resources where improvement is desired. In today's dynamic health care industry, breast centers are faced with providing quality care while simultaneously keeping costs under control. A center's staff must not only be familiar with existing standards of care, but must also be aware of new advances in technology. Lowell General Hospital has taken a major step to ensure they provide the best possible quality care to breast patients in their community.

The Cancer Center at Lowell General Hospital supports a comprehensive Breast Health Program including:

• Multidisciplinary conferences that gather together a certified Breast Health Navigator, the surgeon, medical and radiation oncology physicians, diagnostic imaging specialists, social workers, nutrition services, and others to ensure a course of treatment and care that meets each patients’ unique needs.
• A certified Breast Health Navigator who guides each woman from initial detection of abnormality through diagnosis, treatment planning, and all phases of survivorship.
• Clinical trials offering options for innovations in care.
• Genetic testing for Breast Cancer.
• Full range of support services for survivors of breast cancer as well as their children and families.
• ACR certified Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.

Lowell General Hospital is an independent, not-for-profit, community hospital serving Greater Lowell and surrounding communities. Named to the Boston Business Journal’s Top 25 Largest Hospitals for the past three years, the hospital’s main campus offers 217 licensed beds, including 28 bassinets and a Level IIB Special Care Nursery.

A full range of medical and surgical services are provided for patients from newborns to seniors, including the Regional Center for Maternal and Pediatric Care in partnership with Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center, the Cancer Center, and the Heart and Vascular Center. The hospital’s satellite campus at Lowell General Chelmsford offers a variety of outpatient services including the Surgery Center, Imaging Center, Patient Service Center, Center for Weight Management and Bariatric Surgery, Center for Wound Healing, and Floating Hospital for Children’s Pediatric Specialty Center.

With specialty services ranging from cancer care to cardiac services, pediatric specialty clinics, and pain management, in addition to 24-hour emergency and trauma services, surgical care, critical care and general medical inpatient units, the hospital provides exceptional, community healthcare.

The Cancer Center at Lowell General Hospital provides diagnosis, treatment and care for adults including radiation and medical oncology, surgical treatment, access to clinical trials, cancer risk assessment as well as support services for patients and their caregivers. It is accredited with certification in Radiation Oncology by the American College of Radiology and received Approval with Commendation as a Comprehensive Community Cancer Program by the American College of Surgeon's Commission on Cancer.

The  National Consortium of Breast Centers is proud to recognize Lowell General Hospital as a Certified Participant in this program. Lowell General Hospital will continue in its commitment to provide the highest quality care to its patients and begins the process to become a Certified Quality Breast Center of Excellence.

The National Quality Measures for Breast Centers™ were developed by referencing the Health Care Advisory Board's Clinical Quality Dash Board for breast centers published in the fall of 2004. The National Quality Measures for Breast Centers™ reflect more than five years of work, which has culminated in the adoption of more than 33 National Quality Indicators™.

The National Consortium of Breast Centers promotes excellence in breast health care for the general public through a network of diverse professionals dedicated to the active exchange of ideas and resources. It serves as an informational resource and provides a quality initiative of the National Consortium of Breast Centers, Inc. support services to those rendering care to people with breast diseases through educational programs, newsletters, a national directory and patient forums. It encourages professionals to concentrate and specialize in activities related to breast disease and encourages the development of programs and centers that address breast disease and promote breast health. It facilitates collaborative research opportunities on issues of breast health; and developed a set of core measures to define, improve and sustain quality standards in breast health care programs and for quality performance in all types of breast health care facilities.
