Lowell General Hospital Brings Cardiac ICD Professional to the Community
June 16, 2011 - Lowell, MA – Cardiovascular disease is the nation's leading cause of death for both men and women. However with new technological and medical advancements, researchers and physicians are finding more ways to combat and prevent cardiovascular disease. An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is one such remarkable advancement that has, according to the American Heart Association, been very successful in preventing sudden death in patients with known, sustained ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation. But what is it exactly? How does it work? Do people with life-saving ICDs really go back to living a healthy, successful life?
The Heart and Vascular Center at Lowell General Hospital is bringing nationally known Dr. Samuel F. Sears, Jr. of East Carolina University to Lowell to speak at the center's support program on June 27, 2011. The program, Maximizing Survivorship: Successful Living with Cardiac Disease and an ICD, is a free presentation open to individuals and family members living with ICDs.
This FREE program will offer strategies of survivorship including:
- Building social support
- Action planning
- Stress management
- Shock management
- Increasing confidence of living with an ICD
- A free dinner
When: Monday, June 27, 2011 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM

About the Speaker
Samuel F. Sears, Jr., PhD is a professor at East Carolina University, a member of the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences in the Brody School of Medicine, and a member of the Department of Psychology in the Thomas Harriott College of Arts and Sciences.
