Recognized for Successful Programs to Address and Reduce Teen Pregnancy

February 6, 2012 - Lowell, MA - Faced with the challenge of a high teen pregnancy rate in the City of Lowell, Lowell General Hospital developed a successful program to tackle some of the needs in the community, and earned the 19th Annual Spirit of Excellence Award presented by Modern Healthcare. The awards recognize a commitment to patients and the community as judged by a panel of national healthcare leaders.

Results of the efforts to educate and prepare teen parents for childbirth and parenting have been significant. The teen-specific programs have prompted improved confidence in balancing school and childcare, reducing fear of childbirth to lessen the pain and anxiety during delivery, increasing the number of breastfed babies, and improved transitions to home. Pregnancy prevention education and outreach is also part of the teen program to help reduce the number of teen pregnancies in the region.
