• Lowell General Hospital President and CEO Named to Senior Post at Massachusetts Hospital Association

June 29, 2009 - Lowell, Mass. - Lowell General Hospital's Chief Executive Officer and President, Normand E. Deschene, FACHE, was recently sworn in as Treasurer of the Massachusetts Hospital Association (MHA) for the 2009-2010 term. A long-standing and active member of the MHA, Mr. Deschene previously served on its board of trustees as Secretary as well as past chairman of the MHA Standing Committee on Finance.

Deschene joins incoming MHA chair, Ellen M. Zane, MA, President and CEO of Tufts Medical Center and Floating Hospital for Children in Boston, Dennis D. Keefe, Chief Executive Officer of Cambridge Health Alliance, who will serve as Chair-Elect and Peter L. Slavin, MD, President, Massachusetts General Hospital, as Secretary.

The Massachusetts Hospital Association is a voluntary, not-for-profit organization comprised of hospitals and health systems, related organizations, and other members with a common interest in promoting the health of the people of the Commonwealth. Through leadership in public advocacy, education, and information, MHA represents and advocates for the collective interests of its member hospitals and health systems, and supports their efforts to provide high quality, cost effective, and accessible care.

Mr. Deschene holds a master's degree in Hospital Administration from the University of Minnesota and a bachelor's degree from Providence College. A fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, he served as a past regent for the College for the state of Massachusetts and was named the "Healthcare Executive of the Year" in 2006.

Mr. Deschene is an active member of the American Hospital Association, Hospital Financial Management Association, Healthcare Management Association of Massachusetts, and the Massachusetts Hospital Association. He also serves as a member of the Executive Committee of Voluntary Hospitals of America Northeast. Mr. Deschene was appointed by the Governor of Massachusetts to the Goddard Council, advising upon the development of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math curriculum for the Commonwealth, and is a member of the Betsy Lehman Center for Patient Safety Expert Panel in Obstetrics.

Locally, Mr. Deschene serves as the chairman of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Lowell and is a board member of the American Textile Museum, Merrimack Valley Economic Development Council, and The Lowell Plan. He is also a past chairman of the Greater Lowell Chamber of Commerce.
