Lowell General Hospital Helps Children Be Doctors for a Day at Annual Teddy Bear Clinic

March 19, 2013 - Lowell, MA – Lowell General Hospital will give children the opportunity to learn valuable health information and alleviate fears about hospitalization by helping them become doctors for a day at Lowell General Hospital's annual teddy bear clinic at the Pheasant Lane Mall in Nashua on Saturday, April 20, 2013. This free event's main focus is to help reduce children's fears of hospitals as they perform a variety of mock procedures on their beloved stuffed animals, including X-rays, casts/splints, blood draws/shots, and even experiencing what it is like to be in an ambulance. Children get to see first-hand the types of experiences they may have during a trip to the emergency department or a doctor visit. Most importantly, children learn that the hospital is a caring, comforting place even when they are sick. The Teddy Bear Clinic will be held from noon to 3:00 PM on the bottom level in front of Dick's Sporting Goods and Macy's at the Pheasant Lane Mall located in Nashua, NH.

Last year's event drew 250 participants from ages 2 to 92. Attendees visited different stations staffed by Lowell General Hospital employees from a variety of departments, including Pediatrics, Emergency Department. Surgical Services, and Emergency Medical Services (EMS). "The Teddy Bear Clinic is a great event for kids of all ages," said Amanda Kiernan, Manager of Lowell General Hospital's Center for Community Health and Wellness. "It is a great way to get them out of the house and interact. Our volunteers are able to break things down to a child's level and perspective, and they enjoy walking their "best buds" through "treatment". We look forward to offering this program to the community in the years to come."
