Lowell General Earns Recognition for Endoscopy Center

November 11, 2011 – Lowell, MA – The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), a leading gastrointestinal medical society, has recognized the Endoscopy Center at Lowell General Hospital as part of its program specifically dedicated to promoting quality in endoscopy.

ASGE logoThe Lowell Endoscopy Center is one of 363 endoscopy units to be granted the recognition since 2009 and one of 30 this year. The ASGE Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program honors endoscopy units that follow the ASGE guidelines on quality assurance, privileging, endoscope reprocessing, and CDC infection control guidelines. Recognized hospitals have also completed specialized training on principles in quality and safety in endoscopy.

"ASGE is delighted to recognize these 30 endoscopy units, whose staff work hard every day to provide high-quality care to their patients in a safe environment," said Brett T. Petersen, MD, FASGE chairman, ASGE Quality Assurance in Endoscopy Committee. "There continues to be an outstanding response to this program. We are proud to acknowledge these ASGE members through our Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program for their commitment to promoting the highest standards of safety and quality."

On average, Lowell General performs about 100 endoscopy procedures each week, offering a non-invasive way to support patients with gastrointestinal issues in diagnosis and treatment.

Procedures done at the Endoscopy Center help physicians detect and screen for colon cancer, diagnose stomach and gastrointestinal problems, and find and remove polyps, tumors, treat ulcers and other diseases and disorders. Look for the symbol on display at Lowell General assuring patients and referring physicians that the Endoscopy Unit is dedicated to delivering high-quality endoscopic care and has received specialized training around these principles.
