LGH Awarded Highest Continuing Medical Education Certificate of Recognition

Massachusetts Medical Society Grants Hospital's Accreditation

June 16, 2011 – Lowell, MA — The Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) has awarded Lowell General Hospital with a six year term and status of "Accreditation with Commendation" for the hospital's Continuing Medical Education program (CME).

Participating in and fulfilling accredited CME programs are obligatory for physician licensing and renewal. Every two years Massachusetts physicians are required to complete 100 hours of CME in order to renew their licenses.

Lowell General Hospital exceeded the criteria for educational programs set forth by the national Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) as judged by the Committee on Accreditation Review of the Massachusetts Medical Society. The hospital has received this highest accreditation for the first time by complying with criteria above and beyond the basic requirements. For example, working collaboratively with the Lowell Department of Public Health, Lowell General Hospital utilized outside stakeholders to educate its clinical staff on medical issues that directly relate to the Lowell community, an action which allowed the hospital to meet the higher standards.

Continuing Medical Education programs in Massachusetts hospitals maintain the standards of medical care at the highest possible level. Quality medical education keeps physicians current and ultimately patients receive better care. With new research and advancements continuously changing the practice of medicine, high levels of education are imperative to retain high standards of care.

Lowell General Hospital's CME Programs are available to all physicians of Greater Lowell. The hospital's Medical Education Program is coordinated by Medical Librarian Donna Beales, MLIS under Director of Medical Education Dr. Byron Roseman.
