Interpreting Your BMI

BMI Weight Category
Under 18.5 Underweight
18.5- 24.9 Normal
25 - 29.9 Overweight
30 - 34.9 Obese
35 - 39.9 Clinically Obese
40 or greater Morbidly Obese

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a general indicator of whether or not you are maintaining a healthy weight based on the ratio of your weight to your height. It’s an imperfect scale as it doesn't account for differences in body types. For example, a 5 foot 9 inch bodybuilder who weighs 215 pounds and has a 6% body fat would be labeled obese. And there is already a new scale just for people from Southeast Asia where the ranges are lowered.

While it can be a good indicator of the healthiness of your weight if you fall within certain statistical norms that were used to develop it, it should be taken with a significant grain of salt and should not be used as a substitute for a professional evaluation of your health by a doctor.

Talk to a Patient Ambassador

Patient Ambassador Program

The Center for Weight Management and Bariatric Surgery has had a Bariatric Ambassador Program for the past five years. This Lowell General Hospital official volunteer patient-to-patient support program has been enormously successful. Through this program, we have found that our current patients develop a certain trust, comfort, and confidence with those patients who have already undergone a weight loss procedure. They derive a great deal of hope and encouragement from their peers.

Our ambassadors promote programs and services that encourage patients to continue their journey to improved health. In conjunction with clinic staff, they will support patients before and after surgery, coordinate meetings, field trips and special events based on patient needs, and most importantly they provide understanding support.

The Bariatric Ambassador Program has helped patients – new and old – face fears, find strength, and motivation. We look forward to expanding our efforts and using the talents of our long-term post-op patients to better serve the unique needs of our expanding post-weight loss procedure population while they are in the maintenance phases of their weight loss journey.

If you would like to speak to an ambassador, call 978-788-7200.
