Lowell General Sun Santa Raffle Sets New Record

Lowell General Hospital CEO Norm Deschene was Santa for a day as a total of 47 lavish gift baskets were raffled off at the hospital’s main campus on Wednesday, December 16th in the hospital's Clark Auditorium before a spirited crowd.

The baskets, created and donated by employees of dozens of different hospital departments, ranged from hundreds of dollars in cash to trips and gifts worth thousands.

“I’m blown away every year by the generosity of our staff,” Deschene said. “Each year, they try to outdo each other a little more. With the help of The Lowell Sun, we are able to help less fortunate families provide a great Christmas for their children. We have a lot of fun, but in the end, those kids are what this effort is all about.”

The sale of raffle tickets to staff, patients and the public yielded more than $70,00, an amount which the hospital matched to produce a total contribution of $140,000.

The hospital’s annual donation is the biggest single contribution to the Sun Santa Fund each year. The fund, started by the newspaper in 1988, distributes the money to needy families through gift and food vouchers across 23 communities with the help of The Salvation Army and Community Teamwork, Inc.

It was the most successful Lowell General Sun Santa raffle yet, surpassing last year's then-record total of $115,800. A special thank you to all of our staff, physicians, visitors and friends who supported this event through ticket purchases and basket donations. We would also like to give a special thank you to Linda Gaetano, Debhinn Watts and our entire Volunteer and Concierge Services Department for coordinating such a successful event.
