Lowell General Hospital opened the new Hanson Family Emergency Department and Trauma Center on the first floor of the Dahod Building on Wednesday, December 19. Named for longtime hospital supporters Rick and Martha Hanson and their family, the new area helps Lowell General deliver on its promise to provide the highest quality emergency care to residents in the Merrimack Valley. The opening also signifies the official completion of the historical 200,000 square foot expansion project that has been under construction since May 2010.

"The new department was designed to provide a new approach to efficient and personalized emergency care for our patients," said Nathan MacDonald, MD, Chief of Emergency Services. "With fifty private treatment rooms, the new department is split into six distinct zones so that flow and efficiency can be enhanced for patients of all acuities and needs."

To facilitate flow of patients, the main lobby of the emergency department will have a front end rapid assessment area. The new department is now adjacent to the Cardiac Catheter Laboratory for cardiac cases needing immediate intervention. There is also a designated pediatric waiting space with child-friendly activities and private rooms with flat screen televisions to help calm and soothe our young patients. Staffed by a board-certified pediatric emergency physician, Lowell General Hospital's pediatric emergency service treats patients 21 years of age and younger. In addition, all physicians are board-certified in Emergency Medicine and all RNs have specialty certifications in Trauma and Pediatric Emergency Care.

Additional features of the new department include:

• Family counseling area
• Front-end triage area
• Two new Radiology suites and in-unit CT scan to speed patient access and testing
• Two distinct trauma rooms
• Enhanced ambulance bay with charging pods
• Onsite helipad
