Weight Management Mandatory Pre-Operative Educational Classes

The Center for Weight Management and Bariatric Surgery

These groups, listed below, are assigned to all pre-op patients as a requirement for surgical approval. Patients MUST contact their patient advocate to reschedule any of these assigned classes by calling 978-788-7207 or 978-788-7114.

Buddy Class

Patient will be asked to bring a significant other, friend or family member that will be their support person. The class will consist of the patient, their Bariatric Buddy, and a patient ambassador problem solving 3 situations. The CWM facilitator will guide the label reading and meal planning exercise, and a postoperative complication and behavioral speed bumps scenario.

For patients without a Bariatric Buddy an ambassador will be assigned to the patient to encourage and email over the first 6 months. The emails will be generic and scripted for all to use. These emails are not to give advice but to encourage postoperative patients to attend the groups they have been assigned.

The class will be an opportunity for the patient’s support person to receive information regarding weight loss surgery and have their questions answered.

The support person will receive a “You’re in this together” guide to understanding the postoperative diet do’s and don’ts and importance of postoperative appointments and support groups attendance during the first year after surgery.

Complications and Speed Bumps

A class taught by one of our staff nurses. The goals of this class are to teach patients what to expect as they prepare for surgery, to inform patients how to recognize rare post surgical complications, and to explain how best to avoid common speed bumps that might slow down progress.

A class taught by one of our staff dietitians. The goal of this class is to teach patients the proper way to eat to achieve and maintain weight loss goals both before and after surgery. Weight loss surgery patients have different nutritional needs than non-surgical patients, so it is extremely important to know how to meet your body's needs for long term health and success.

Heal Faster

A class taught by a member of Lowell General Hospital's operating room nurses. The goal of this class is to give patients an understanding of how stress reduction and positive thinking helps healing after any surgery. Patients will receive a relaxation CD that can be used at home to practice relaxation techniques to help prepare for surgery.

Label Reading

A class taught by one of our staff dietitians. The goal of this class is to assist patients in the skill of reading, understanding, and interpreting the nutritional labels of the foods they buy. It is a critical skill for all weight loss patients to insure their success.

A group where patients get to meet with post-op patients from the Center to ask questions about the behaviors and dietary changes that are necessary when preparing for weight loss surgery. Every question is important and answered honestly by patients that have had weight loss surgery at Lowell General Hospital. Patients are willing to answer any question related to their personal journey. Patients are not medically trained, all medical questions would be deferred to the Center for Weight Management staff.
