American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer Community Cancer Program

In 2008, the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) granted a three-year Approval with Commendation as a Comprehensive Community Cancer Program to the Lowell General Hospital Cancer Center. Accredited for the past 20 years, the recent approval rating granted "With Commendation" to the Cancer Program is a landmark achievement, validating the quality of its program beyond the standard level of approval.

A Facility receives a Three-Year Approval with Commendation by the CoC following an on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor upon witnessing the standards that represent the full-scope of the cancer program. These aspects of excellence include cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, and community outreach and quality improvement.

In 2004, the Cancer Program earned commendations from the CoC in Outcome Analysis, Patient Guidelines, Prevention and Early Detection Programs, and Cancer-related Improvements. Lowell General Hospital Cancer Program is proud to be part of this national accrediting body whose focus is standard setting and the delivery of quality health care.

American College of Radiology 

In March 2005, The Cancer Center at Lowell General Hospital became the only cancer care center in Greater Lowell to be awarded a certificate of accreditation by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

The American College of Radiology is a national organization that awards accreditation to facilities for their achievement of high practice standards. The Cancer Center is one of only seven hospitals in Massachusetts to be recognized by this accreditation in radiation oncology.

According to the ACR, the accreditation programs "provide an important level of confidence for patients, referring physicians and managed care organizations that only the highest quality care is being provided by accredited facilities."
