Sentinel Node Breast Exam

After a breast cancer has been found, the sentinel node breast exam helps to determine if the cancer has traveled to the lymphatic system.

A Radiologist will inject a small amount of isotopes into the breast and it will travel to the first lymph node of your system. The technologist will scan the area which takes approximately 10 minutes. In the operating room, a surgeon will then remove this small node and possibly others to see if they have been affected by the cancer.

Breast Health is a specialty at The Cancer Center at Lowell General Hospital. For more information, please speak with your oncologists or visit our Breast Care Program online. Your Breast Health Navigator will help you understand and prepare for this exam.
