Diagnostic Testing for Heart Disease Earns Mark of Quality Lowell, MA - Lowell General Hospital announces the recent accreditation of its Echocardiography Laboratory for adult transthoracic and adult transesophageal echocardiography by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL).
Echocardiography is a non-invasive test used in cardiology to understand the structure of the heart and flow of blood. It is useful in the detection and management of many types of heart disease. While non-invasive, it is a complex imaging technique that relies on the experience and training of both the physician and the sonographer for accurate diagnosis.
"Successful treatment and management of heart and vascular disease begins with the right diagnosis," says Richard Birkhead, MD, FACC, medical director of the Heart and Vascular Center at Lowell General Hospital. "Accreditation for echocardiography brings confidence in the commitment to quality testing for the diagnosis of heart disease. With accurate testing, we can deliver the proper treatment."
The ICAEL evaluates the quality of these and other critical elements of an echocardiography laboratory and provides independent accreditation. Accreditation status signifies that the facility has been reviewed by an independent agency which recognizes the laboratory's commitment to quality testing for the diagnosis of heart disease. Criteria for accreditation include established and adhered to policies and procedures, following established guidelines, having registered professionals with specialized clinical expertise, ongoing quality improvement programs, education requirements for physicians and staff.
