Meet a Few of Our Terrific Volunteers

Kay DeGennaro

Kay DeGennaro, a Tewksbury resident, is often the first person that visitors meet when they enter Lowell General Hospital's main lobby. As an Information Desk Volunteer on Friday mornings, Kay gives basic patient condition reports and directions to various departments throughout the hospital. Making our hospital visitors welcome is a primary function of these volunteers and Kay is definitely a great example.

Thomas Gendreau

Thomas Gendreau, after retiring from a local bank, found he had time to give. Wanting to work with patients, he came to Lowell General Hospital's volunteer program to see what opportunities were available. He found 'the perfect job' in our volunteer Patient Transport Department. As a transporter, he brings patients to and from their rooms for various tests or to the main lobby for discharge. Tom has mastered the art of pushing wheelchairs. Tom doesn't know the meaning of the word 'retirement' as he volunteers at Lowell General three days a week. His personality and gentle way with the patients he transports is definitely just what the doctor ordered!

Pat Hannon

Pat Hannon wanted to work with patients and we had the perfect area for her! We matched her 'people skills' to a very patient oriented area and placed her in the Emergency Department. Her functions as an Emergency Room Liaison are many! Pat works between the staff of the Emergency Room, the patients themselves and quite often the patient's family. Sometimes we find Pat sitting and talking to a patient, getting warm blankets when a patient is cold or even folding sheets and blankets. On some occasions all she can offer is a listening ear, but whatever the task, Pat is always there! She very quietly handles the extra little amenities that can sometimes go undone because of the hectic pace in the Emergency Room.

Deirdre Schiffen

Deirdre Schiffen loves babies and as a 'Cuddler' she has the chance to demonstrate her love for our newest members of the community every time she volunteers in our Newborn Nursery! Whether it's changing diapers or feeding the babies, Deirdre will tell you it is one of the most satisfying 'jobs' she has ever had! Lowell General Hospital has the community's only Special Care Nursery and with the special care our tiny infants require, Deirdre is only too happy to spend hours rocking one of our little ones to sleep. A loving atmosphere is so important to our newborns and Deirdre definitely adds to that!
