Deb PetersonYou'd be hard pressed to find a more ardent champion for Lowell General than Debra Peterson, a phlebotomist at The Cancer Center for over eight years.

"The way we're treated here is different from anyplace else I've ever worked," she says. "There's such flexibility and sensitivity to the fact that you have a life outside of work. For example, I need to leave early one day a week and my manager was willing to work that out with me.

"And they're always doing something to build morale," she continues. "Sometimes it's a tie-dyed t-shirt giveaway, a barbeque, a free holiday turkey dinner, or an afternoon snack cart filled with free candy bars and fruit. The hospital is very good to us when it comes to bonuses, too."

Debra also values the open communication between management and staff. "We're kept informed about what's going on in the hospital and plans for the future through regular town-meeting type get-togethers," she explains. "It makes us feel a part of things. And everyone - from the president and CEO on down - is open to questions and suggestions. It makes each of us feel important. "This is the only job I've ever loved," she adds. "I'll never leave!"
