Daffodils and Desserts

Nothing says spring like the advent of those beautiful yellow flowers. On Thursday, March 22, 2012, the front lobby will be transformed into a display of floral arrangements and delicious treats. Daffodils will be available for purchase to benefit the American Cancer Society. The Auxiliary sale of baked goods, floral arrangements and gifts will benefit the LGH Cancer Center.

Daffodil Tea /Garden of Hope event

On Wednesday, April 13th, the LGH Auxiliary hosted a Daffodil Tea for forty-five guests in the Clark Auditorium. The event celebrated the successful relocation of the Garden of Hope to the grassy hill in front of the hospital on Varnum Avenue. In spite of the rain that day, our daffodils were blooming with many additional shoots breaking through the ground—a fitting symbol of hope for cancer patients.

The ladies dined on scones, tea sandwiches and pastries, but many were eyeing the rice crispy treats topped with Swedish fish reserved for a trio of little girls and their entourage of stuffed bunnies and dolls. Donna Thoene, LGH Gift Shop Manager, awarded prizes for hats: Most Outrageous, Pauline Lambert; Most Creative, Lynn Chaput and Most Beautiful, Tarina Mansur.

LGH Vice President for Administration Win Brown addressed the group detailing the relocation of the daffodil bulbs and updating the construction plans. Pauline Lambert spoke about the history of the Garden of Hope. A display board showed photos from the original dedication ceremony in 2000.

The event ended with the silent auction of two beautiful handmade quilts by LGH employees Dianna Morine and Cheryl Morine. The auction raised $125 for the LGH Cancer Center.

60th Anniversary Annual Meeting

On Monday, May 23, 2011, nearly one hundred board members, past presidents, hospital administration and Auxilians gathered at the Vesper Country Club in Tyngsboro, MA to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Lowell General Hospital Auxiliary (1951-2011). This auspicious event was marked by a champagne toast, a standing ovation for our past presidents, and a delicious luncheon followed by a berry basket cake made by our three-time LGH Auxiliary Taste of the Town dessert winner I Dream of Jeanne Cakes and donated by Dr. Eric and Carrie Meikle.

After lunch, Auxiliary President Tarina Mansur conducted the business meeting. The minutes of the 2010 Auxiliary Annual Meeting were approved. The slate of Auxiliary Officers and Board Members for 2011-12 was passed. Pauline Lambert, chair of Daffodils and Desserts, presented Meg Lemire-Berthel and Claudia Antolini of the LGH Cancer Center with a Bose Sound Dock Series II, $400 of gift cards and six leather executive chairs which were already in use for the comfort of friends and family accompanying patients during their long treatment sessions. President Tarina Mansur along with First Vice President Mary Bennett and Second Vice President Carrie Meikle presented LGH President and CEO Norm Deschene with a check for $125,000, the third installment of our $750,000 Legacy Fund pledge.

After the business meeting ended, the fun began. Win Brown won the door prize of a black and white bag, $25 gift card to Marshalls and two tickets to the Women Working Wonders Power of the Purse event in October. Stephanie Deitzer of Style at Work presented a Maxxinista Fashion Show with clothing provided by Marshalls of Plain Street in Lowell. The models were Pauline Beaulieu, Carrie Meikle, Elaine Parent, Priti Patel, Cathy Ryder, Pam White and Elaine Zouzas Thibeault. Even President Tarina Mansur wore a red dress from Marshalls ($29.99)! Never pay full price for fashion.

The attendees of the Annual Meeting included Auxiliary Past Presidents: Clementine Alexis, Stella Athanasoulas, Judy Carven, Lynn, Chaput, Carol Gilchrist, Pauline Lambert, Debbie Lemos, Jean McCaffery, Evelyn McCartney, Mary Stevens, Debbie Trull and Elaine Zouzas Thibeault. The Lowell General Hospital administration was strongly represented by President and CEO Norm Deschene, Executive Vice President and COO Jody White, Vice President of Administration Win Brown, CFO Susan Green, VP and Chief Human Resources Officer Peter Zarrilla and Director of Philanthropy Ellen Kallman.

Book Fair

Several times a year, the Book Fair is held in the hospital's main lobby and has something for everyone! We have children's books, bestsellers, cookbooks, scrapbooks and even special gifts such as toys and snuggly blankets.

Taste of the Town

The Taste of the Town is the Auxiliary's signature event. Tradition is a delightful, fun-filled evening where various restaurants and caterers display fine cuisine and our patrons sample a wonderful array of appetizers, entrees and desserts. The Gift Basket Raffle offers over a dozen gorgeous baskets with everything from sporting event tickets to evenings out on the town and even the latest electronics.

The 25th Annual Taste of the Town was a smashing success! A record breaking $53,590 was raised at the sold-out event, held at the UMASS Inn and Conference Center in Lowell.

Event attendees voted on their favorite dishes in a variety of categories, earning several of the participating restaurants and caterers "People's Choice Award" accolades, including:

  • Best Appetizer: Tuna Tartare Ponzu by Moonstones
  • Best Entrée: Asian Surf and Turf over Wasabi and Lemon Grass Mashed Potato by Two Chefs are Better Than One (a repeat winner in this category)
  • Best Dessert: Apple cider Sorbet in a Cinnamon Tuile Cup by Sodexho

"Every year the Taste of the Town gets better," said Tarina Mansur, Lowell General Auxiliary President. "Not only is the food terrific, but the spirit of community and generosity are evident in every bite. We are so grateful to everyone who supported Lowell General Hospital by participating in this fun event."

The Taste of the Town was made possible by the generosity and hard work of the sixteen participating restaurants and caterers, including: Bailey's Bar and Grille, Bianco's Catering, The Capital Grille Burlington, Cavaleiro's Restaurant, Centro Restaurant & Bar, Cobblestones of Lowell, Gibbet Hill Grill, I Dream of Jeanne Cakes, L'Andana Restaurant, Moonstones, Ricardo's Café Trattoria, Saffron Bistro, Sodexho, Two Chefs Are Better Than One, UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center, and Westford Grille.
